Santos’ announcement that a Final Investment Decision (FID) has been made on their US$3.6B Barossa gas and condensate project is great news for their joint venture and the Northern Territory.
As the Santos Managing Director and CEO Kevin Gallagher says; “Barossa and Darwin LNG life extension will create 600 jobs throughout the construction phase and secure 350 jobs for the next 20 years of production at the Darwin LNG facility.”
The Barossa field will replace the existing Bayu Undan field gas supply to Darwin LNG and “kick-starts the $600m investment in the Darwin LNG life extension and pipeline tie-in projects.”
Some have misinterpreted this project as an additional train but it is work undertaken to upgrade the existing LNG facility. Who knows what may eventuate later on with the oil & gas activity ramping up both on and offshore but for the certainty this announcement provides for the here and now, it’s a great positive for the NT industry.
